amitabh bachchan, rajinikanth, vettaiyan

When Vettaiyan was announced, fans were thrilled at the prospect of witnessing two cinematic legends—Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan—reunite on screen after 33 years. Directed by TJ Gnanavel and produced by Lyca Productions, the film featured Rajinikanth as a gun-slinging police officer and Amitabh as a justice-driven lawyer. Their courtroom confrontation was one of the film’s most anticipated moments. While audiences were in awe, one actor who observed it up close had a rather surprising take—Malayalam actor Alencier Ley Lopez, who played a judge in the scene, was far from impressed.

Alencier claims Rajnikanth & Amitabh Bachchan cannot act

During a media interaction, Alencier spoke candidly about his experience working on Vettaiyan, making a rather unexpected remark, “I realised Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan don’t know how to act.”

Revealing how he landed the role, Alencier shared that he was not paid for the part but was flown to Mumbai and accommodated in a five-star hotel. “I was sent a flight ticket to Mumbai, and they provided accommodation at a five-star hotel. I just had to sit there as a judge for one shot, with Amitabh Bachchan sir and Rajinikanth sir seated on either side of me,” he recalled. However, what truly excited him was not the luxury but the opportunity to witness these screen legends perform firsthand.

Taking a light-hearted jab at Rajinikanth’s signature action sequences from the past, he joked, “During my pre-degree days, I watched Rajini sir stop the whirring blades of a helicopter with his bare teeth. So, I was curious to see how he acts in front of the camera. During the Vettaiyan shoot, I saw him perform his stylised form of acting, his body language, and the way he walked out of the courtroom. Then, Amitabh Bachchan would roar like a lion, and I had to act shocked after all this.”

On wanting to build a career in Tamil industry

His most blunt remark followed soon after. He added, “I realised I couldn’t compete with them because I don’t know stylised acting, nor do I have a deep baritone. All I can do is perform in films made by the likes of Dileesh Pothan, Sharan Venugopal, and Rajeev Ravi. Also, I realised that they cannot act.”

Acknowledging the possible fallout of his words, Alencier admitted that his comments would likely make headlines and potentially close doors for him in Tamil cinema. “Honestly, I just used the opportunity to see how they performed, not to establish a career in Tamil,” he confessed.
